We are co-designing & producing ceramic tiles to be installed inside ‘PIP’ – our future community space and cultural building.
TILE PROJECT
Starting with the ground floor bathrooms, team member and ceramic artist, Alice Thatcher is working with a steering group of local residents to design and create tiles for the space, drawing on their existing ceramic skills, backgrounds and cultures whilst supporting residents to learn new skills in ceramic tile production.
This collaborative project takes inspiration from architecture and ceramics from residents’ diverse heritages and our local Stoke-on-Trent heritage – the Minton tiles found in many of the terraced houses across the city (and in our old pub building!).
Alice is leading on hands-on tile production sessions, involving many hands in this project and ensuring all voices are represented. Alice says,
“I am hoping the tiles will be recognisable and familiar to communities in the locality, alongside being welcoming and striking, giving people an instant comfort of place and belonging. This is important with the neighbourhood being ever changing and transient”
We are so excited about this project, which will be a beautiful contribution to our future building. It’s a fantastic way of involving our residents in hand on processes, trips, decision making and skills development in order to produce these tiles.
Every single nook and cranny in our future building is a creative opportunity to involve residents in the completion of our future building, which will be open to the public in Summer, 2025.
